History of duodji
Sámi Aesthetic

When we talk about duodji, we then also think of its impact on us as human beings. The shape and the oral stories are part of duodji today. When we make duodji today, we may ask, do we need knowledge about duodji traditions and which position did duodji have for people in the past? Do children, youths and others know anything of the history when they express themselves through duodji, and is the information important?

Duodji is a part of our common Sámi history, we like to say. Therefore we need to know about how our ancestors have thought.  What kinds of values have been important, what about the access to natural products, migrations, social contacts, believes etc? I try to find answers to these questions when I study artefacts in museums, written sources and through my own artistic expressions.
