History of duodji
Sámi Aesthetic

Duodji has lot of oral knowledge. People have learned to make different duodji through their experiences, and to understand what duodji means for them and for others.

Often, when sámi and indigenous art, we relate that to traditional art. The craftsperson/artist can through her/his work express traditions and can in that way be a holder of tradition. The question often raised is what it means to live in a modern society and in a modern time. The answer is often that duodji need new expressions, which have no boundaries to tradition. In my research, I discuss about tradition in duodji and the process of modernisation.

Indigenous knowledge and artistic expressions are other topics that I work with. Topics like indigenous art in the art history, and how duodji is part of an upcoming indigenous art history are other topics that I am dealing with in my research.
